Tips For a Healthy Septic System
It is recommended to pump the septic tank 3-5 years. This is to remove sludge buildup before it enters the drain field or home.
A balance of bacteria in the septic tank is very important. Over-the-counter products can assist in bacteria accumulation. Bacteria build a foam layer that pulls the solids to the bottom of the tank. This prevents them from being flushed into the drain field.
Products that state "Flushable" or "Biodegradable" are not always good for the septic system. Some of these products can not be pulled through the foam layer, therefore float on top and can be flushed into the drain field causing the drain tiles to become blocked.
Overuse of the septic system can cause the drain field to become oversaturated. This can cause the septage water to push to the surface or push back into the home.
